So this is it, the first FensePost Podcast. A few weeks ago I sat down and compiled a mix of various songs; some new, some old, most finding some relation to garage rock or garage pop. Hence the title, From The Garage. The theme is loose, so some bands fit and some don’t. There are sixteen songs total here, stemming from local Seattle and Portland acts on across the world. One of my favorite singles from last year was The Splinters‘ debut 7-inch Splintered Bridges. Mixing lo-fi garage rock with post punk and grrl pop, the band fit into everybody’s favorite niche genre of 2009. With compounded female vocals semi-shouted into microphones, ragged and gritty guitar riffs, and a lo-fi echoing tambourine, the girls are back with their first full-length, Kick. “Mysterious” fits perfectly aside “Splintered Bridges” with catchy vocal hooks and loud guitar riffs. The Splinters: Splintered Bridges [Track Review]

We’re sure seeing our share of all-girl groups these days. Already-talked about here on FensePost include Vivian Girls (a track review of “When I’m Gone” was published this morning), Pens, and now The Splinters, whose “Splintered Bridges” matches the aforementioned groups in garage pop excellence. This quartet officially released their debut 7-inch featuring “Splintered Bridges” as the title track and a-side, and “Sorry” as the b-side on the first of this month.
