On Air at KSVR: March 8, 2013 Playlist

I received a message from Stuarto requesting I cover his show in the late afternoon hours of Friday, March 8. After a minute or two to think about it, I agreed. In all the times I’ve covered for his show over the past year and a half, I have never done a show that gives a nod to his show, which often features more mainstream music including a handful of tunes from the 60s and 70s. God Help The Girl

God Help The Girl‘s debut, self-titled LP opens with a female touch on Belle & Sebastian’s “Act Of The Apostle”, one of the champion tracks off The Life Pursuit. In comparison to Murdoch’s other project, God Help The Girl gives it not only a female front but baroque backing vocals and an orchestra background heavy with strings. Title track “God Help The Girl” finds the ladies and Murdoch enveloping the track in the pop melody common in Belle & Sebastian, primarily found in the percussion, yet both the female vocals and up-front orchestra presence reside. Belle & Sebastian’s Stuart Murdoch has a new project. His latest venture is God Help The Girl and, in all honestly, as far as I can tell it’s pretty similar to Belle & Sebastian. That’s what I wrote as “Mary’s Market” played over my speakers for the first time. “Come Monday Night” on the other hand takes things in a slightly different direction, and it’s here where God Help The Girl sets itself apart from Belle & Sebastian.
