Pens: High In The Cinema [Video]

Pens the Band

Everyone is crushing on the distorted pop these days, and I guess I’m a part of the crowd. The latest discovery is that of UK trio Pens, and they just dropped an excellent DIY green-screen-ish video on us for the awesomely fuzzed out track “High In The Cinema”. True to the lo-fi, this band is less like The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, who are undoubtedly pop, and more like the lo-fi female version of punksters Japandroids. The video is simple, fun and extremely colorful. The song, as you can probably guess, is the same, and I’m sure I’m not the only one to dub it brilliant. Read More »Pens: High In The Cinema [Video]

Motel Motel: Coffee [Video]

Motel Motel

The music video can be a very expressive medium to convey a message, just as the audio itself can formulate an impressionable amount of emotion: happy, sad, hopeless, joyous. The best videos, of course, complement the song in such a way, and, in fact, embark on their own journey into the mind of the creator. “Coffee” by Motel Motel finds director Matthew Murphy doing just that, and the viewer is simply drawn into an attempt to discover meaning behind the imagery. moped10: A Walk In The Woods [Video]

moped10

Pop music comes in many forms, and moped10 demonstrates exactly that with “A Walk In The Woods”. Featuring extremely bouncy guitar and keyboard riffs, the perfect accompanying trap set beats, and infectious but often bizarre vocals, the song dabbles slightly in the experimental. And like much of moped10’s music, inches toward the industrial. Whatever it is, you can classify moped10 as 1: a family affair, as the video features what I can only assume is the husband/wife duo and their two children (aka the Moody family), and 2: an absolute delight. Eat Sugar: Pop Singer [Video]

Eat Sugar

Eat Sugar‘s “Pop Singer” reminds me a bit of The Rapture, for some reason. I’m talking about Pieces Of The People We Love, not Echoes. And their video for the song hints of a more disturbing version of Thunderheist’s “Jerk It“. At least initially. It may begin with a dancer clad in a tight and bright outfit who is then joined by a bear wearing the same. Then video has a twist that takes it straight to the realm of the demented. Father Murphy: So Now You Have To Choose Between My Two (Black) Lungs [Video]

Father Murphy

Showtime’s Dexter gives us an interesting foray into one serial killer’s mind. It’s something you’d expect from a station like Showtime, whose original series lineup is pretty impressive to begin. But it’s not something you’d necessarily expect in a music video. Watching “So Now You Have To Choose Between My Two (Black) Lungs” by Father Murphy, I cannot help but picture the destructive figure as a madman in the making. Edward Sharpe And The Magnetic Zeros: Desert Song [Video]

“Desert Song” may be buried somewhere in the middle of Edward Sharpe And The Magnetic Zeros‘ latest LP, Up From Below, out as of last week on Community Music / Fairfax Records, but it’s the intro to their twelve-part, feature-length movie-musical. The song features an intro filmed by singer Alex Ebert’s mother and a chant by his father.

The Dead Weather: Treat Me Like Your Mother [Video]

The Dead Weather

So, you probably already know that The Dead Weather is the latest project by Jack White of The White Stripes and The Raconteurs fame. You probably also know that White’s new musical female counterpart is Alison Mosshart, previously best known for her dominating vocal presence in The Kills. And you’ve probably listened to The Dead Weather’s new album, Horehound, three times by now; I have only listened to “Treat Me Like Your Mother” and I’ve only done so once, while watching the video. Anna Ternheim: What Have I Done (Acoustic) [Video]

Anna Ternheim

When watching a band perform their latest hit in a music video, it is often dull and uninteresting. But when the song is proprietary — that is, unique to the video — something changes. And when the unique song is accompanied by cinematography that has the occasional wobble, giving the appearance of amateur, the greatness is heightened yet again. Both these elements are highlights in the latest Anna Ternheim video, an acoustic version of “What Have I Done” featuring Bjorn Yttling of Peter Bjorn & John fame. Ternheim too hails from Sweden, and the sexy accent is emphasized by the emotive piano tinkering from Yttling. Read More »Anna Ternheim: What Have I Done (Acoustic) [Video]

Francis: Take It Easy [Video]

Francis

Shortly after releasing their self-titled debut EP, the band Francis now brings us a video for “Take It Easy”, one of the more mellow tracks from said EP. The song lacks much of the luster of the alcohol fueled vocals in songs like “Drunk Stranger”. The video finds the band panhandling for a trip home to pose for a final band shot. It’s a creative and entertaining romp, if you can call it that. And it suits Francis well. Read More »Francis: Take It Easy [Video]

Papercuts: Future Primitive [Video]

Papercuts at CMJ 2007

“Future Primitive” was a bit of a surprise. It is obviously Papercuts, as can be heard in both instrumentation and Jason Quever’s vocals, but there’s more going on here than on previous records. The song is dreamy and hazy and adorned with psychedelic pop true to Quever’s San Francisco home. “Future Primitive” is also more confident and proprietary; Papercuts are refining their sound and making it truly their own. And then there’s the video. The entire thing is black and white, and the storyline is an entertaining one to watch play out, fitting well with the song title.
