The Fenbi International Superstars: Two Miles From Home [Video]

The Fenbi International Superstars

Portland’s favorite and most outlandish band of gypsies has teamed up with the amazingly gifted animation artist Temris Ridge to bring you their terrific new track “Two Miles From Home”. The worldly boys of The Fenbi International Superstars have strayed from their classic mild mannered Irish stamina to bring their every growing fan base a tale of the demons that you will never be able to avoid. They have chosen a nice catchy indie pop sound to bring out the message rather than their signature ‘happier than Gogol-Bordello’ sound, proving once again that they have neither the fear, nor the lack of ability to touch any ground in the world of music they please. The Sweet Serenades: Die Young [Video]

sweet-serenades

The Sweet Serenades are, well, just that; a sweet compilation of all things happy or sad, in mourning or bliss. This Swedish duo look as though they could be pounding lagers amongst muscly, flanneled woodsmen, but damned if they wouldn’t hesitate to break into a beautiful ballad at any moment. “Die Young”, from their amazing album Balcony Cigarettes, is a beautiful track serenading (pun, intended) one of the greatest yet most heartbreaking mistakes human beings can make: the one night stand. With guest vocals from Club 8’s Karolina Komstedt, this tremendous little ditty, recently featured on the for some reason still hit show Grey’s Anatomy, is sure to steal your heart. Or, as these guys portray it, wish it were worn as a giant suit for all to see. Read More »The Sweet Serenades: Die Young [Video]

The Antlers: Bear [Video]

antlers

The only reason Hospice wasn’t in my top 50 of 2009, perhaps, was that I’d only heard experienced two tracks by The Anters‘ quite critically acclaimed album. Those songs were “Bear” and “Two”. Then they visited Daytrotter back in November and I heard a few more. Still, it wasn’t enough to form an overall opinion of the album, of course. The band now gives us a video for “Bear”, and it’s further proof that I really need to get out of this funk in which I’ve been and pick up this record. It’s a little strange and makes you contemplate the meaning behind it, but that’s pretty typical of some of the best music videos around. Read More »The Antlers: Bear [Video]

Air Conditioning School: Wake Me Up [Video]

Air Conditioning School

On my radar late last year, Total Babe came to dominate as a band that released one of my favorite EPs of the year. From that same label, So-Tm Records, comes Air Conditioning School. The band’s lazy acoustic folk-pop has the perfect swagger for the upcoming summer months, and “Wake Me Up” is a perfect example of this band’s ability. Like the song, which has traits common to the lo-fi and DIY communities, the video is simple and monochromatic. Read More »Air Conditioning School: Wake Me Up [Video]

The Lost Levels: Training [Video]

the-lost-levels

Contrary to the few other songs I’ve experienced from The Lost Levels, “Robot” is entirely mellow. Backed by minimal synth notes and electronic vocals, “Robot” is mysterious and borderline eerie. Fitting; the band calls it an Eno-esque android lullaby, and the description fits perfectly. Switching to “Training”, it’s clear The Lost Levels have a penchant for the classic electronic. They’re not above adding in the quirky nature of a group like Devo, while holding close the kraut electro sensibilities of Kraftwerk. And of course, there’s plenty of Eno references as well. Islands: No You Don’t [Video]

islands

Of course Islands features Michael Cera in their video for “No You Don’t” off the band’s third record, Vapours. Dorky as usual, Cera is the perfect cast member for an Islands video, whose hyped-up pop finds the band returning (at least somewhat) to the days of Return To The Sea but with a heightened effort in the glam department. Nick Diamond is heading in a direction not unlike that of Kevin Barnes, albeit with more glitter, more beats, and less internal strife. Read More »Islands: No You Don’t [Video]

James Apollo: No East, No West [Video]

james apollo

James Apollo‘s “No East, No West” is starts with an airy whisper. The video is a play on lighting; a swinging light bulb makes a cool effect atop Apollo and the band as they play and perform. From these minimal beginnings may not hold much weight when it comes to the vast body of folk music out there, but they sure do once the band kicks in. Without that humble introduction, the full sound wouldn’t carry the impact it does. This is pure bluesy, roots-influence folk rock. And where Apollo stands out most are when the band kicks in after the quiet, open spaces. Read More »James Apollo: No East, No West [Video]
