Cave Deaths: Glacier On Fire [Album Review]

Cave Deaths

It is just after 7am and I’ll soon be getting ready for work. As I’m writing this review it’s starting to hail outside. It is startling because the impact of each little ball of hail is quite loud on the roof and the shed outside my window. I have never seen such large hail. I have always wondered if there is some complex mathematical equation that would explain the weather, life, and everything in general—an equation like the one pondered by the brilliant but paranoid mathematician in Darren Arnofsky’s Pi. Cave Deaths also reminds me of mathematical equations. Read More »Cave Deaths: Glacier On Fire [Album Review]

Thao: We Brave Bee Stings And All [Album Review]

Thao With The Get Down Stay Down

Written by bob_vinyl

We Brave Bee Stings and All by Thao With The Get Down Stay Down (MySpace) begins and ends like it may be a simple twee pop album. Both “Beat” and “We Go” have a thin, light pop sound that could be mistaken for a novelty. What happens between those two songs, however, is anything but. There is no doubt that a twee influence runs through the album, but there is so much more. Read More »Thao: We Brave Bee Stings And All [Album Review]

Anathallo: Floating World [Album Review]

Anathallo

In 2005 it was Clap Your Hands Say Yeah’s unprecedented sale of 25,000 plus self-released albums sold out of an apartment in New York that had the world ranting and raving. In 2004 it was Arcade Fire’s Funeral that had people talking. In 2002, The Polyphonic Spree took the stage with their countless numbered choir in creepy white or pastel colored cult-like robes. Those years have come to pass, but the bands remain prominent in the minds of music fans. So who will be the act to stun music fans in 2006? Let me introduce you to that band—the group everyone will (or should) be talking about in the years to come: Anathallo (MySpace). Yet this Mount Pleasant, Michigan group already has numerous releases under their belt, dating back as early as 2001. So why haven’t you, or I, heard of them before? Modern Skirts: All Of Us In Our Night

Modern Skirts

Written by Ron Trembath

Listening to Modern Skirts (MySpace) is like listening to the soundtrack of your favorite film on the Sundance Channel. They really found a home on a recent tour with R.E.M. (who could have the same thing said about them, but more likely Starz!). And this listener-friendly band’s sophomore release, All Of Us In Our Night, is an almost cinematic delight. Speck Mountain: Some Sweet Relief [Album Review]

Speck Mountain

Written by Fense

From the opening moments of “Shame On The Soul”, the first track off Some Sweet Relief by Speck Mountain, one is drawn into the group’s space-y, reverberation-heavy style of soft pop. With lengthy chord progressions, eerily soothing female vocal coos, and a predilection toward the softer side of psychedelia, one might draw comparison to Mazzy Star. The Lolligags: Out Of Perversity Join Hands [Album Review]

The Lolligags

Written by Fense

Okay, something has changed chemically in my brain since the last time I listened to The Lolligags (MySpace). Either that, or this band has altered the way they write songs. To be honest – completely honest, bearing my soul here folks – I didn’t really care for The Lolligags’ EP from last year. There was a catchy song or two, but it failed to hold my interest. Well, that sad fate is no longer. Out of Perversity Join Hands is absolutely brilliant! Read More »The Lolligags: Out Of Perversity Join Hands [Album Review]

Condo: Best Of Luck [Album Review]

Condo the Band

After a complete listen to the third album by Condo, Best Of Luck, it feels like the moment after you pass a horrific freeway accident. You are left wondering what it was you just witnessed. Ryan McNeil’s guitar work is similar to the tires that spun out of control, right into a beautiful intertwined combination of drum and bass. And the overall charisma of the album is so awe striking, you may feel bad for enjoying yourself so much. Read More »Condo: Best Of Luck [Album Review]

Oppenheimer: Oppenheimer [Album Review]

Oppenheimer

It’s summer here in the rural college town of Pullman, Washington. Spring semester ended just over a month ago and the population quickly halved to roughly 15,000 occupants. The added vacancy and decline of the rambunctious Greek (fraternities and sororities, not the nationality) population with the warming weather and beautiful evenings makes Pullman an outstanding location for sitting outside, sipping a beer, grilling corn on the cob and steak, and listening to upbeat summer songs. The weather is nice! Friends are around! Let’s eat and drink and listen to some fun happy music! Read More »Oppenheimer: Oppenheimer [Album Review]
