I quite enjoyed Easter Island‘s previous release, Better Things, but it didn’t stun me. What I mean by that is that while it was by all means very good, it wasn’t as gripping as one would hope. Well the band is back with Frightened, a new LP, and it doesn’t suffer the same fate. Both are solid works, but Frightened has staying power. And it’s tracks like “Hash” that give it that. If you’re a long-time fan of Tilly and the Wall, “Love Riot” may come as a bit of a shock. It’s loud, raucous almost. It’s rock. It’s heavy. What made Tilly so unique in the past — the handclap/foot-stomp combo — remains a staid feature here, but pairing it with indie pop sensibilities is seemingly a thing of the past. Lefse Records is poised to release the debut LP by Levek this coming September, on which you can find their brand new track “Black Mold Grow”. We’ve seen Levek before; Father/Daughter Records gave us a 7-inch for their single “Look on the Bright Side” a year or so ago, and hearing they’ve got new music in the works is pretty exciting. Influenced by 60s pop, the band flirts with the genre a little while adding in noisy guitars. Read More »The Boombox Hearts: 100 (The Latest Flame)
“Laura” by Western Affairs is not a song to take lightly. In the beginning, you get a cool, laid-back percussion paired with a surreal, echoing guitar. This ambient sound continues throughout the song and keep things hip and dreamy, but the vocals take things in an interesting direction. Read More »Western Affairs: Laura
Way Yes is one of those bands that creates bizarre, quirky songs. Or, at least that’s the impression I got from prior EP, Herringbone. “Important” is the first tune I’ve heard off their new album Walkability and it’s changing my mind a little bit. Yeah, they still have a bit of quirkiness, but they’ve refined it in a way that makes the oddities a little more subtle. Read More »Way Yes: Important MP3
FensePost contributor Ron Trembath turned me onto Anna-Lynne Williams through her projects Trespassers William and Lotte Kestner. Her latest venture is that of Ormonde, partnering with Robert Gomez on the project. Ormonde is set to release their debut LP, Machine, via Hometapes on August 7.

The subtleties off the songs this band creates makes it the perfect title. “A Breath” pushes Suturee forward; harmonies are more in sync, instrumentation dreamier, the rises and wanes of volume more pronounced.
