Right off Ducktails‘ January release of The Flower Lane, the side project of Real Estate’s Matt Mondanile is back with five-song EP Wish Hotel. Immediately Mondanile lays it on thick in “Tie-Dye”, with a consistent cymbal ride, heavy beats and that signature laid-back vocal styling of which Real Estate is so fond. It’s a sound that blends electronic traits with those of psychedelic. Mondanile retracts from the direction he took with The Flower Lane, returning Ducktails to solo status. Crystal Stilts debut LP, Alight of Night, was released on Slumberland back in 2008. They followed it in 2011 with In Love with Oblivion. In between and since, they have released several singles and an EP, 2011’s stellar Radiant Door. But the band went silent after the release of Radiant Door, and we now know why. I first heard Jail Weddings a few months after falling in love with PAPA’s A Good Woman is Hard to Find, which became one of my favorite EPs of 2012. (In retrospect, Jail Weddings’ Four Future Standards EP should have received similar treatment.) What initially drew me to Jail Weddings was that Gabriel Hart’s vocal styling reminded me of the Daniel Presant/Darren Weiss collaboration.
