Belgian Fog - Loveless Way

Belgian Fog: Loveless Way (Premiere)

Belgian Fog - Loveless Way

KEXP’s Robert Dale is back with a new track called “Loveless Way” from his solo project Belgian Fog. Like his previous singles “Wait For Help” and “You Drive Me to Madness”, “Loveless Way” is an electro-fused pop song with plenty of glorious beats, a few nods to synth-based genres of past, and a deeply introspective narrative. “I’d rather stay trapped in a loveless way / Than try to make the pain go…” sings Dale in the chorus. The Men

The Men: Pearly Gates

The Men

Tomorrow’s Hits, the forthcoming fourth album in as many years by The Men, is set for release on (no surprise) Sacred Bones Records. Earlier this week, the band debuted “Pearly Gates” from the album; holding a similar countrified punk-rock edge found throughout their 2013 release New Moon, The Men inject horns (one of two tracks on the new album to feature the section) for a sound that is somewhat reminiscent of Washington Post-dubbed “weirdo collective” Dark Meat. Devon Reed

An Interview with Devon Reed, the man behind “You Be My Heart, Vol. 1”

You Be My Heart is a relatively new compilation (released late last year) featuring the likes of Horse Feathers, Marissa Nadler, Bowerbirds, Letting Up Despite Great Faults, Mark Kozelek and many more. Just after the New Year, I sat down with the compilation’s mastermind, Devon Reed (pictured above), to talk about the release, the charity it supports and how he approaches projects like this.

Solander

Solander: All Opportunities

Solander

Solander came to my attention a few years back after Fredrik Karlsson branched out from his work in Swedish orchestral and experimental folk-pop collective Fredrik. While Solander has been around for the better part of a decade, the band’s debut LP didn’t arrive until 2009 and was followed a few years later by their sophomore release. They are now prepared to give us their third album, Monochromatic Memories, in February of 2014. Read More »Solander: All Opportunities

Angel Olsen

Angel Olsen: Forgiven/Forgotten

Angel Olsen

After her release of the Sleepwalker single earlier this year, I questioned whether Angel Olsen was going through a transformation. The revealing, introspective LP Half Way Home from 2012 was about as minimal as they come. Full vocals seemed as quiet as a whisper — though they were not — and her guitar was so soft the album was borderline a capella. “Sweet Dreams” off Sleepwalker changed things. Trails And Ways

Trails And Ways: Lost (Frank Ocean Cover)

Trails And Ways

Since their inception a few years back, Trails And Ways have provided us with their own rendition of a few notable songs. The latest artists Trails And Ways has set their eyes on is the infamous Frank Ocean, in particular his song “Lost”. Dreamy and adorned with T&W’s signature bossa-nova sound, the band is flawless in their rendition of the song. Read More »Trails And Ways: Lost (Frank Ocean Cover)

Saâda Bonaire

Saâda Bonaire: You Could Be More As You Are

Saâda Bonaire

On their announcement of their forthcoming reissue of Saâda Bonaire’s lone single from the early 80s, Captured Tracks made note to file the group under Why was this band not huge?. Makes perfect sense; listening to the band’s single “You Could Be More As You Are”, one is adorned with sounds somewhere between Kraftwork (the song was produced in their studio) and Stereo Total. Juan Wauters

Juan Wauters: Water

Juan Wauters

Since releasing Play Silver Nickels and Golden Dimes on Hardly Art a few years back, The Beets’ front-man Juan Wauters has focused his creative efforts on a solo project. He continues to possess a strong Lou Reed/Velvet Underground-meets-Syd Barrett influence. “Water” is the latest track to surface from Wauters and the first off his forthcoming early 2014 LP N.A.P. North American Poetry on Captured Tracks. Read More »Juan Wauters: Water
