Cleemann: Ambitious (Spejderrobot Remix) [mp3 review]

cleemann

When Cleemann, a Danish folk experimentalist of immense and uncontested talent, released last year’s 45 Minutes Mostly About Caring, everyone who heard it instantly fell in love with the highlight cut “Ambitious”. It was a track that everyone could relate to, feel for, and become entranced in its mesmerizing and simple complicity. And over a year later, it is still receiving daily praise. And one of the highest of praises had to be when Danish artist Spejerrobot (a clever combination of “Boy Scout” and “Robot”), a.k.a. Mikael Elkjaer, got his hands on it. This self taught audio mangler puts a new electronic spin on Cleemann’s already eccentric track. Read More »Cleemann: Ambitious (Spejderrobot Remix) [mp3 review]

The Winebirds: Séance Hill [Album Review]

winebirds

Ever wondered where you might find pop-folk heaven? Well, one thing is certain; you probably have to hike to the top of Séance Hill. Here you might find the likes of Loudon Wainwright and Kimya Dawson passing a joint amongst the more youthful versions of themselves. Jointly, their successors would be known as The Winebirds. While kicking away all the glitz and indie glamour of their Portland hometown, this vocal swapping band has created something so soothing and downright cute you might find yourself hugging random puppies, and then you’ll tip-toe through the tulips growing in the indie rock prairie you once thought you fully understood. The Jesus Rehab: The Highest Highs And The Lowest Lows [Album Review]

jesus-rehab

Once you move past their name which comes a close third in brilliant hilarity behind the likes of Test Icicles and The Dead Kenny G’s, The Jesus Rehab are beyond what you would expect. With a name like that, you might expect a sassy post punk explosion of anger and atheism. But, you couldn’t be more wrong. Instead, The Highest Highs and Lowest Lows comes out softly, proclaiming beautiful indie pop with a hint of acoustic glee that measures up nicely to The Modern Skirts, or Belle & Sebastian on a Benzedrine trip. A Fine Day For Sailing: Sand Box [Album Review]

a-fine-day-for-sailing

What sort of group puts out two full length albums in less than a year? Well, how about a damn good one? And A Fine Day For Sailing is most definitely so. Fresh (extremely, in fact) off their last pop wonder, My Baby Loves Pop Music, the happy-go-lucky band of English excitement junkies are back with Sand Box. And to say they have improved would be to dumb down the greatness of My Baby, but I’ll be damned if these cats didn’t create something entirely original, using the format that worked wonderfully a few months ago. Transient Songs: Cave Syndrome [Album Review]

transient-songs

Are you tired of your father’s versions of psychedelic rock? It can be granted that the 70’s were the age for some of the finest LSD-related music and mishaps history will ever know. But, surely it becomes tiresome to constantly hear about Rush’s supposed futuristic nonsense, or Roger Water’s boring obsession with the sky, and not having anything of your own time for a real comparison. Well, degenerate hipsters and demon-friendly youth-mongers, you are in luck. Introducing: John Frum a.k.a. Transient Songs. Stick it to your old man you gentle monsters! I Am The Dot: The Crown [Video]

i-am-the-dot

Zach Tipton, a.k.a. I Am The Dot, has an irreparable and distinguished eye for inducing visual energy. His latest single, “The Crown” is an experimentally charged pop ballad that could very well be about anything you wish. But, with a very direct and certainly touching display of childhood imagery, his personal vision will become bloody obvious as you watch a young Zach roller-skate his way through a standard impressionable childhood. This song, from his latest EP The Royal Few, is about growth. It is about the spirit that embodies us at times. It is about time, and the entirely too fast pace of which we move through such a precious commodity. Read More »I Am The Dot: The Crown [Video]

Neil Nathan: The Distance Calls [Album Review]

neil-nathan

Damn the struggles of being inevitably just too late on some things. The Ripple Effect already said it best about Neil Nathan when they said he was a “perfect balance of rock and soul”. In the simplest form, that is exactly what this cool cat and his debut album The Distance Calls really is. A splendid array of old school highway rock mixed with a decent batch of new age love ballads that are smoother than the cooking process of Hamburger Helper. The Fenbi International Superstars: Live At The Hop & Vine [08.05.10]

fenbi-international-superstars

The stars aligned, and the patio was full. It was another beautiful cigarette burned night in the great city of Portland. And gracing the stage on this weekend’s eve night was none other than one of the finest gaggle of neanderthals to grab a few instruments, as well as a few dozen pints, and put on a display of some of the most exciting world music you could ever hear. The Fenbi International Superstars were out in full force to celebrate Hop & Vine’s 2nd anniversary as an establishment! Mike, Todd, Orion, Riley, and Kris are a group of ill-mannered and well-tempered gentlemen that you’ve probably only read in books about the origin of counter culture. All that estranged and diluted history of the age old Beats, comes back to life through these powerfully talented band of new age merry pranksters. Neutral Uke Hotel [Feature]

neutral-uke-hotel

Don’t you love Neutral Milk Hotel? Who doesn’t, right? Well, it’s safe to say that nobody loves them more than Shawn Fogel (of Golden Bloom). If you think your adoration can overpower his, try doing a complete tribute set of NMH’s indie rock classic Aeroplane Over The Sea….with a ukulele. Even then, you might not be able to match the beauty and brilliance of one of the most creative cover acts being produced right now. Neutral Uke Hotel is a brilliant seaside coffee house worthy band of flannelled gypsies obviously not in tune with the ordinary and terribly average world. Featuring members of Golden Bloom, as well as gents from The Motion Sick, this is definitely a renowned indie rock experiment. Read More »Neutral Uke Hotel [Feature]

SSS: This and Not That [Album Review]

sss

Up until earlier this year, you may have heard Sam Smith, a.k.a. SSS, as the percussionist for the once amazing, no debunked, Portland based group No Go Know — A band that defied all acts of normalcy, and created some of the finest spaced out garage rock ever made. But, as is the fate of so many brilliant acts in history, they are done. Fortunately for us, Smith’s solo project is a brand spanking new reminder of the group that rattled our ear drums and hearts at the same time. This and Not That, SSS’s latest album, is a nice batch of experimental goodness. Read More »SSS: This and Not That [Album Review]
