Silence Is Sexy & The Royal Republican Orchestra: This Is Hollywood EP [Album Review]

silence-is-sexy

To celebrate Silence Is Sexy’s full year of success after 2009’s Euronet sensation This Ain’t Hollywood, the Netherlands’ finest group has developed quite a treat for the listeners they picked up over the last 365 days or so. Teaming up with the fantastic Cuban Royal Republican Orchestra, these electro-rockers have developed the very cleverly titled EP, This Is Hollywood. Their high paced energy and strong verbal stamina can now be heard in an all new fashion — one which prefers tears way over fears. Cleemann: 45 Minutes Mostly About Caring [Album Review]

cleemann

The great land of Copenhagen has a real DIY prodigy under its city lights. Gunnar Cleemann is one of the most well rounded musicians you will ever come across. He writes, plays, directs, breathes music. His lyrics are philosophical, but simple enough to refrain from being too pretentious (suck on that Oberst!) And we can’t forget his wonderful vocals, reminiscent of early solo Clapton. 45 Minutes Mostly About Caring is so much more than the title would insist. It is a triumphant display of one man conquering all aspects of the art of musicianship. Read More »Cleemann: 45 Minutes Mostly About Caring [Album Review]

Robin Grey: Strangers With Shoes [Album Review]

robin-grey

Robin Grey is working his way up from being a “hidden treasure of the European underground” with his breakthrough sophomore release, Strangers With Shoes. The wonder of Stoke Newington has compiled some beautiful and obviously poetic-based tracks for the troubadours and sun chasers of the world to use to feel whole again. Grey has always been a splendid storyteller, but he’s outdone even himself this time around. Read More »Robin Grey: Strangers With Shoes [Album Review]

Castevet: Summer Fences [Album Review]

castevet

It’s been a while since a real intelligent art punk band has emerged from the sewers of the dying underground. With the up-and-coming return of pop punk hitting the mainstream (knocking cry baby bullshit emo bands out of the tear-filled water), it’s almost hard to understand why any artist in their right mind would want to try and handle such a quickly burning torch. Enter Castevet and their debut album Summer Fences. Now we’re talking. Break out the acoustic guitars, PBR, and lack of self respect. It’s time for a good scream. Westfold: Westfold EP [Album Review]

westfold

The boys of Westfold have outdone themselves yet again, this time on their third EP. In Westfold, the band takes the raw elements from their first release, No Frills Catalyst, and smash it against the proverbial high tower of obscurity that was their second release, Morning Commute. Portland’s rising stars had no reason to take unnecessary risks; instead they merely master their craft and up production value a bit on what can only be considered their finest work to date. Good Weather For An Airstrike: Signals EP [Album Review]

good-weather-for-an-air-strike

If you looking for a great album that can help you lose all sense of reality for a short period of time, then look no further than Good Weather For An Airstrike’s Signals EP. There is more obscurity packed into a mere 25 minutes than one might be able to physically handle. The sounds are dubious, sort of haunting, and have almost magical stream-like effects. It’s like watching a Disney movie while you overdose on Robitussin. Read More »Good Weather For An Airstrike: Signals EP [Album Review]

The Western States Motel: The Cliff [mp3]

western-states-motel

Carl Jordan has THAT voice. You know, the one that sounds like Gavin Rosdale after he’s taken 40 No-Doz. It’s that raspy yet emotionally pleasing tone you might recognize with the likes of Pete Droge or Eels, the former heavyweight champions of obscurity-laced pop. But, it’s time to step aside Mr. E. The Western States Motel is here to bring oddball power pop back in a big way with their ultra catchy track “The Cliff”. Read More »The Western States Motel: The Cliff [mp3]

Anthem In: The Cloudbusting EP [Album Review]

anthem-in

If Kate Bush and Robert Smith had 5 children together with the intention of creating one of the most uniquely talented batch of kids for the new millennium, Anthem In would be those products of success. Much like their predecessors, this is a band that can make you cry as you dance the night away. And The Cloudbusting EP (derived from Kate’s 1985 single of the same title) rains down genius and prosperity over the unwilling to adapt. Read More »Anthem In: The Cloudbusting EP [Album Review]

The Good Graces: Bring On The Tambourines! [Album Review]

the-good-graces

For some of us out there, The Good Graces might be the greatest fucking band in the world! For every flannel wearing, soul searching, obsessive coffee drinking fool (myself included), Kim Ware and company have created a “bomb” tribute to happy times during misery. That, and more specifically, the 1990’s. It’s getting to that time in our lives where the end of the last millennium needs to have a properly built sense of nostalgia amongst the middle aged and dying. And Bring On The Tambourines! is a beautiful album even without pop culture references from the good ole days. Read More »The Good Graces: Bring On The Tambourines! [Album Review]

It’s Elephant’s: Gets Along [Album Review]

its-elephants

It’s Elephant’s are the lime in the malt liquor. They’re the smiling faces at a funeral. Their sort of punk, sort of acid-induced rock persona transitions into a far too demanding world with a substantial frenzy. It’s sort of like a jazz choir playing at CBGB’s. Their sophomore release, Gets Along, beats you over the head with a rock ‘n roll NERF baseball bat till you want to shoot up your nearest supermarket. This is one of the most deliberately entrancing discs that has come out in some time. Get ready to lose your mind. Read More »It’s Elephant’s: Gets Along [Album Review]
