Cats On Fire

Cats On Fire: A Few Empty Waves

Finland’s Cats On Fire returns with a new LP called All Blackshirts To Me on Matinee Records. Within you’ll find the dreamy indie-pop tune “A Few Empty Waves”. With Smiths-esque vocals, hints of a jangle rhythm guitar, and an occasional space-y post-rock one. With its instantly memorable vocal chorus and the employment of vibraphone, this is Cats On Fire at their finest.

Mount Eerie

Mount Eerie: House Shape

I always get excited when I hear something new from Phil Elverum, the mastermind behind post-Microphones project Mount Eerie. Mind Spiders

Mind Spiders: Wait For Us (Video)

Mind Spiders are a bit out there, with wild synth-based music that conjoins 60s pop sensibilities with heavy late 70s garage rock. Their video for “Wait For Us” is similarly out there, the premise being “A reclusive man sends a distress beacon to catch his ticket off an abandoned planet”. Featuring a two-minute drone intro by Mark Ryan (who also stars in the band and in the film as “Spaceman 1”) before launching into the song. It’s definitely worth a watch and has a nice little twist toward the end that should not be all that surprising given the synopsis.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah: Hysterical (Video)

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah

Here’s something we haven’t had in a while: something new from Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. In fact, just the other day I was looking through my CDs and came across their debut, self-titled LP, and wondered if the band was still around. “Hysterical” is the first single and title track off the band’s new LP. Not all too surprising, I missed the album’s release last September. Read More »Clap Your Hands Say Yeah: Hysterical (Video)

Naked Gods: No Jams

Naked Gods

The opening 32 seconds of No Jams‘ opening track “Teenage Colony” is more than enough to get you hooked on Naked Gods. It has a light Teenage Fanclub feel to it, but stands distinctly on its own. Wild rock guitars, hook-packed songs, and great vocals; these songs are well constructed and thought-out. And, as I said, No Jams had me from the get-go. Read More »Naked Gods: No Jams
