Benjamin Verdoes

Benjamin Verdoes: The Evil Eye

Benjamin Verdoes

Tomorrow, Benjamin Verdoes releases The Evil Eye on Brick Lane Records. For Verdoes, a founding and continuing member of the Seattle-based internet sensation Mount St. Helens Vietnam Band (MSHVB) on Dead Oceans, it is his first venture into solo territory. I doubt I’m the first to say that Verdoes is just as powerful here as he has been throughout the MSHVB tenure. The Evil Eye is the first truly exciting album I’ve heard this year. The Men

The Men: Pearly Gates

The Men

Tomorrow’s Hits, the forthcoming fourth album in as many years by The Men, is set for release on (no surprise) Sacred Bones Records. Earlier this week, the band debuted “Pearly Gates” from the album; holding a similar countrified punk-rock edge found throughout their 2013 release New Moon, The Men inject horns (one of two tracks on the new album to feature the section) for a sound that is somewhat reminiscent of Washington Post-dubbed “weirdo collective” Dark Meat. Devon Reed

An Interview with Devon Reed, the man behind “You Be My Heart, Vol. 1”

You Be My Heart is a relatively new compilation (released late last year) featuring the likes of Horse Feathers, Marissa Nadler, Bowerbirds, Letting Up Despite Great Faults, Mark Kozelek and many more. Just after the New Year, I sat down with the compilation’s mastermind, Devon Reed (pictured above), to talk about the release, the charity it supports and how he approaches projects like this.

Gap Dream: Shine Your Light (Video)

gap-dream-cultistzine

This month, Gap Dream will release their sophomore LP, Shine Your Light. In preparation for the release, the band has given us a new video for the opening and title track “Shine Your Light”. It features John Ennis (Mr. Show) trying to find is friend/partner who may have been abducted by aliens. The X-Files-like sci-fi sees Ennis driven to alcoholism (or are those mini Listerine bottles?) in his search; what he ultimately discovers blows his mind. Solander

Solander: All Opportunities

Solander

Solander came to my attention a few years back after Fredrik Karlsson branched out from his work in Swedish orchestral and experimental folk-pop collective Fredrik. While Solander has been around for the better part of a decade, the band’s debut LP didn’t arrive until 2009 and was followed a few years later by their sophomore release. They are now prepared to give us their third album, Monochromatic Memories, in February of 2014. Read More »Solander: All Opportunities

Stephen Steinbrink

Out Now: Stephen Steinbrink’s “Arranged Waves”

Stephen Steinbrink

I recall the first time I heard Stephen Steinbrink. I caught the final few songs of his set at one of What The Heck Fest’s final years. The song was “Breath of Fire” off his 2009 LP Ugly Unknowns. Such a pleasant, poppy sound: I thought this a little strange coming from someone who so fit in with the lo-fi weirdness of the Anacortes crowd. Angel Olsen

Angel Olsen: Forgiven/Forgotten

Angel Olsen

After her release of the Sleepwalker single earlier this year, I questioned whether Angel Olsen was going through a transformation. The revealing, introspective LP Half Way Home from 2012 was about as minimal as they come. Full vocals seemed as quiet as a whisper — though they were not — and her guitar was so soft the album was borderline a capella. “Sweet Dreams” off Sleepwalker changed things. Trails And Ways

Trails And Ways: Lost (Frank Ocean Cover)

Trails And Ways

Since their inception a few years back, Trails And Ways have provided us with their own rendition of a few notable songs. The latest artists Trails And Ways has set their eyes on is the infamous Frank Ocean, in particular his song “Lost”. Dreamy and adorned with T&W’s signature bossa-nova sound, the band is flawless in their rendition of the song. Read More »Trails And Ways: Lost (Frank Ocean Cover)
