Andrew McAllister has a few albums under his belt, but listening to his recordings under Conrad Ford might set you on a path for differing expectations. You see, Conrad Ford was a country music outfit, and his new project under the moniker Vanish Valley is far from that earlier style.
This change in style accompanied a chance of scenery; McAllister transitioned from Seattle to Los Angeles. There remain hints of that earlier style, but for the most part it’s unrecognizable. “Races”, off Vanish Valley’s second release Get Good, is a perfect example of how his music has changed. It drops the country aspect entirely, instead blending folk and psychedelic pop.
What remains is McAllister’s ability to stun with story-like songs, a hint of vocal rasp on par with Jeff Tweedy, and a powerful collection of musicians to accompany him. Vanish Valley will surprise you and enthrall you. “Races” is only the beginning — just wait ’til you hear the rest of Get Good!
The album is now available through bandcamp and iTunes.
